How to create 3-D blooms & other things

Hi everyone. It's Tina here, and  I'm quite excited to be doing my first post for WOW.  I had lots of fun playing with the chippy and creating these 3-D blooms.
I thought I'd share a few layouts with you, and explain some of the techniques I've used on the chipboard.
I used the Mini Alchemy Blooms 3, and split the chip board by wetting it and pulling the edges apart slightly.  The quality of the chippy is fantastic, and it was still very strong after doing this.  I manipulated the upper and lower petals, and allowed it to dry before covering them in white paint.

I painted the blooms with Twinkling H2Os (or you could use metallic paint, Smooch, or Glimmer Mists).  I then added fine glitter to the centers and some chunky glass glitter on the edges, adhering it with Dimensional Magic.

Here's my layout, which is based on a sketch for the July challenge at NZ Paper Chase.

I layered the blooms with other flowers and a crocheted hand-dyed doiley.

And now for another layout...

I just love these WOW cogs, and had to make them a little grungy and rusty.

I created the rust effects by first inking with brown, red, and orange inks.  I then added some UTEE and Distress embossing powders to give different textures.  Lastly, I rubbed Inka Gold paint over parts of the cogs (but you could use Smooch or metallic rubs in the same manner).
I'll be teaching how to create this layout at Greenbank Scrapbook Shop on the 19th of August.

I hope you enjoyed my post.
Happy scrapping,
Tina

Using Your Chipboard With Your Cuttlebug

Hello, it's Liz here with my first blog post for WOW. To start your week off I thought I'd share with you one of my favourite techniques for using chipboard. I love my Cuttlebug almost as much as my WOW chipboard so what could be better than combining the two :)

Here's what I did:

To start off I covered the chipboard in ink - I have used 'Mini Alchemy Blooms 4' for my layout.

Next, I placed the chipboard into an embossing folder and put it through my Cuttlebug.

The chipboard comes out looking like these - all beautiful and embossed.

I then used brown ink to lightly go over the chipboard to bring out the embossing.

And here's the finished layout. I applied the small blooms randomly around the layout using foam mounting tape.

Here is a close up of the larger blooms - I layered them onto paper flowers and then topped off with buttons giving more dimension.

And lastly, here's a close up of the title. I have used the title 'The Smile Says It All' which I painted with glimmer mist.

So even if your layout is simple like mine using chipboard and altering it gives the layout lots of dimension finishing it off beautifully.

Have a great Monday, pop back here Thursday for even more inspiration.

Boy themed cards with WOW ....

I'm so excited to be sharing with you all my first blog post here at WOW. I got some fantastic chipboard in my DT kit and have been hard at work bringing it all together to create this fantastic boy themed set of cards.

I have used the Boy Card Pack and some of the smaller frames from the 12 x 12 Cog Frame Set along with some flamed wings to create this set of 4 cards.

I will show you each card individually and also a close up to show how I have used and decorated the chipboard.
For 100% boy I used a set of flames and one of the smallest cogs. I inlaid the cog with patterned paper and then mounted the skull in the centre.

The 100% boy word is coloured with Twinkling H2O's and then highlighted with silver gel pen. the wings are inked in silver and the cog and skull are coloured with black texta and a white gel pen to highlight the engraving. I love the effect this achieves and how you can really highlight that tiny detail with this technique.

You Rock uses another set of flames, a bigger cog and the wording from the boy card pack. You will notice this time that I have used the negative cog element ..... no waste here! ;)

Again I've used a combo of Twinkling H2O's, gel pens and ink to colour the chipboard.

Next is my favourite of the set, probably cause my 4 yr old loves it too, he told me "good job on your pictures mummy, good job" :D right after he told me that the skull was "too scary".

Again both positive and negative cog shapes but this time I have used them as frames and cut away the card front from inside to make windows.
I then ran some ribbon across the gaps and stuck my chipboard so that it looked like the star was in the sky and the rocket flying.

A close up of my "flying" rocket which is painted with H2O's and highlighted with texta and gel pens.

For my last card I had this cute little robot left and I just couldn't bare to leave him unused.
By teaming him up with a few more cogs I had this great all occasion card for a little boy.

A close up of that cute little robot to show off the detail.

Well that's all for today. I hope you like my set of boy themed cards and in some way I have inspired you to dig out your WOW and create.

If bloggers playing nicely, leave me a comment to let me know you were here.
Till next time,
Happy Creating
Amanda :)

Altering MDF

Hi Everyone,

I thought I might share with you some ideas for preparing/altering MDF.

Words or Whatever not only have a range of wonderful Chipboard, but also they have a huge range of MDF products, including Albums and Off the Page products.

MDF is so simple to dress up with paint. Here is 3 different looks that I have created using the same two shades of Pink.

Firstly paint the MDF with an acrylic paint….(I like to rummage through the cheap bins of paint at hardware and paint stores, you can usually pick up mis-mixes for about $5.00 per litre)

Now for the techniques

1. CRACKLE –As I have got a contrasting colour I want to use, and this is a large surface area I have used Jo Sonjas 'Decor Crackle' medium for this project.

You just brush on the medium, let it become touch dry, then cover with your contrasting colour of acrylic paint. Remember, whichever way your brush strokes go on the topcoat, is the direction you will see the cracked effect. Also remember to allow it to dry naturally, don’t force dry with this medium. The thicker the top coat the bolder the crackle effect.

2. SANDING – apply the top thin coat of paint, and allow to dry (I speed up the process with the hot air gun). Then grab some sand paper and rub back to your hearts content. Focus more around the edges, and do random patches of sanding over the item.

3. DECORATE WITH PAPER – Finally for this one I have applied a top coat of the acrylic paint, and while wet, I dabbed off the excess with paper towel. This gave a mottled effect, I then lightly sanded the edges. Next layer your paper as you wish. ModgePodge, is great for sticking paper to MDF. Coat the whole back of the paper or cardstock using a paintbrush and when in the position you want, use a brayer or rolling pin to flatten out any air bubbles.

These boxes are a custom made order that WORDS or WHATEVER – WOW created for me…thanks Suzanne and Neil. They are to be used to hold paper and will be recessed into a stud wall, to maximize space in my scrap area.

See you next post
