Trying something New

February inspiration by Cathy McClelland with Green Lorikeets

This was the painted inspiration for this months challenge over at...

I love the challenges because it is really up to the individuals how the painting moves them to create.

I immediately thought of the shaving cream technique I have recently viewed online somewhere, and wanted to give it a go.

Step one cheap old shaving cream in a baking dish big enough for your 12 x 12 card stock. Smooth top over with an old shop/credit card.

Step 2 drop some acrylic paint into the shaving cream.

Step 3 smooth the paint down with the shop/credit card and then take a wooden skewer and swirl and move your paint around.

Step 4 lay your card stock onto the shaving cream and gently pat down. Then lift off and set aside to dry.

You can do more than one print from your paint application, just add a couple of different colours and swirl around into different shapes. I even tried different coloured car stock.

The more prints you do the subtler the tones become. Once dry scrap off  the shaving foam with a flat squeegee or metal ruler.

Print one, this one I used.

Print two.

Print three, I added some metallic gold paint into this one.

My finished layout

Thanks for looking

I love my second page but I'm sure I promised no more snow photos in a previous post......I lied! Still had a few snowflakes left, so I have put them to use. Our son and BIL getting a bit crazy on a small patch of snow.

Chipboard pieces Mini Snowflake Pack WOW1681covered with white Brilliance Ink and then a thick coat of diamond Stickles, the large snowflake is from the Snowflake Set WOW900 covered with Waterfall Stickles. The Light Wood Veneer title Like This WV117 has been kept neutral.

Layout Tutorial - The Perfect Summer Day

Hi WOW friends,

Its Elisa here again with my latest share on the blog, a layout I created with lots of gorgeous WOW products which can be viewed on the WOW Website and a bit of bling and I know we all like a little bit of bling.... Right???

Plus I felt the need to use my favourite colour combo.... teal, gold and sepia.

So to start with I painted a thin layer of gesso on my page so that the cardstock can cope with the weight of my layering. Then I used a gorgeous 12x12 Altamatz called ALTA247-Netting with modelling paste and palette knife, waited for it to dry and stuck on my chipboard pieces - Sea Shell Pack , and whirlicious flourishes and medical gauze as you can see in the photo below. I covered all my layers with a coat of gesso.

I then started to add my colour with Colour Blast Shimmer Sprays (once the page was wet with spray I tilted the page back and forth to create drips). Once dry I added an extra layer over the top with Colour Blast paste through a Altamatz - 12x12 Mixed Background producing those lovely lines and bubbles. Colour Blast products produce such gorgeous shine!! After another marathon drying session ;-) I stamped with a sepia versafine ink with a sea bubbles background stamp from Indigo Blu, it happens to be one of my fav's and added some 'Bling' Colour Blast Spray by dipping a fan brush in the spray bottle and flicking it onto my page.

I also embossed a couple of square chipboard pieces - square frames in a gold tone embossing powder - I made sure that it was not a smooth coverage of embossing powder that it had a rough pitted look to it as I sprayed with a teal coloured shimmer spray over the top, this looks amazing....the teal colour lodges in the grooves and rough edges giving the embossed chipboard a two toned metallic effect, another great way to add colour and shine to your chipboard.

In this photo you can see the stamped sea bubbles but also the finished effect of the square frames and the added title - Wood Veneer - The Perfect Summer Day and a few real sea shells my sons have collected from our local beach.

Love that teal and gold shine on the chipboard and wood veneer, looks amazing.

Don't forget a couple of gold shimmer spray splashes to finish it off!!

Medical Gauze is a very cheap way and versatile way to add layers to a mixed media project. It can be dyed, painted, sprayed and it can also handle texture paste and heavy layers.

Well that's it for me today, thank you for popping by the blog and I hope that you enjoyed the tutorial. Remember to jump on over to the WOW Creations facebook page and share your creations with us.

I thought to finish I would share a sneak peek of my next WOW creation, due on the facebook page in the next week .... hope to see you over there.

Tess's Week - 'The Hearts of San Francisco'

Tess back again with another quick share. This one is using my staple wood veneer item - narrow arrows. I love these items and they are easy to incorporate into just about any layout (and I usually find this is just what the layout needs if I feel there is something missing).

The Hearts of San Francisco
Using light wood veneer Narrow Arrow Pack (WV018)

The best thing about this arrow pack is that some of them aren't traditional arrows such as these ones with the hearts on the end. This makes them easy to add to a theme such as this page.

To make them match the layout I have coloured them in with a sharpie marker. As simple as that! The light wood veneer takes the colour so well and the darker colour markers come out an accurate colour which is pretty important when you are trying to match them in with a layout design.

As I talk about these arrows all the time, here is what the pack looks like.

If you are looking for these products, contact your local scrap store or even online store. If they don't stock Words or Whatever, please ask them to order some in for you.

Tess's Week - 'Monument Valley'

Hi WOW blog readers, Tess here. Its day 2 of my week on the blog. Today I have a very clean layout for you and idea for altering your light wood veneer.

Monument Valley
Using light wood veneer Mini Filmstrips (WV011) and light wood veneer Narrow Arrow Pack (WV018)

I have coated the mini filmstrip with a layer of glitter glue to give the green colouring. It looks great with the raw veneer colouring underneath.

I love the light wood veneer 'al naturale' so have left the arrows exactly that way. I love the arrows and could use these on just about everything. They are a staple in my stash.

Thanks for stopping by. I really hope you are liking the what you are seeing so far this week. We have another few days to go and I have more pages to show!

Remember, Words or Whatever products are available from these stores. If your local scrap store isn't stocking it, please ask them to get some in.

Tess's Week - 'New Toy'

Hi WOW blog followers. Welcome to a week with Tess! As we have a long weekend here in NSW I have been working on a few pieces to show and a technique or two that you may not have used of played with.

Todays post is all about NAIL POLISH. Yes you did read that correctly. How many of us buy cheep and nasty nail polish for a random colour that we wear once and never use again? Well here is a solution to that will both use up that stash and help with your colour choices on your chipboard and veneer items.

NOTE: Please use nail polish in a well ventilated area.

New Toy
Using light wood veneer Brush Hearts (WV037), light wood veneer 'Love' title (WV023) and light wood veneer Heart Icon (WV027)

I love the pink, teal and yellow colour combination at the moment and this page is no exception. Most of the page elements are pink or teal so to bring through the yellow I have used a light yellow shade of nail polish to coat the wood veneer pieces.

I love the fact that it gives the veneer that gloss look with very little effort and the nail polish brush is fine enough to get into those little areas and still keep all of the detail, such as the 'Love' title.

I have also used a heat gun on the nail polish in the past to get a textured effect. It will bubble under the heat but still dry relatively flat but with a bumpy surface rather than the smooth flat gloss.

The colour choices are endless and the light wood veneer takes to colour exceptionally well. I have used this on many pages and love the effect!

Thanks for dropping past. I will be back tomorrow with another share.
